A face un film despre suferintele reale ale crestinilor, in cazul de fata catolici, reprezinta o incorectitudine politica, un semn de dogmatism si o lipsa de atentie impardonabila vis-à-vis de curentele la moda. Nu e de mirare ca “For greater glory” a fost ignorat total de casele de productie importante si de marii distribuitori (din fericire exista inca internet). Ilustrarea unui caz de pedofilie, un posibil colaborationism intre Vatican si Al Treilea Reich, prezentarea Inchizitiei drept Gestapo avant la lettre, sunt teme mult mai fertile pentru cinematografie decat uciderea catorva zeci de mii de crestini in Mexic. Dean Wirght a avut insa curajul de a realiza o productie in raspar cu toate prejudecatile pagane ale lumii contemporane. Cu o distributie holywoodiana (Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, Peter O'Toole si multi altii), cadre spectaculoase si actiune suficienta incat sa tina cu sufletul la gura chiar si pe cei neutri ideologic, filmul aduce in plus o poveste (reala!) spusa coerent, cu personaje credibile si probleme atipice pentru firea bleaga a omului modern, care crede ca libertatea se reduce doar la citirea unei revistei scose de Hugh Hefner. “For greater glory” reproduce vizual istoria conflictului dintre statul mexican si biserica catolica, un episod foarte putin cunoscut al istoriei sec XX, cu repercusiuni pana in ziua de azi, cand organizatiilor religioase din Mexic le este interzis dreptul de a detine media electronica sau traditionala. Filmul se concentreaza pe cateva figuri cheie dintre care se distinge in mod clar cea a generalului Enrique Gorostieta, un agnostic declarat dar un liberal autentic, unul din conducatorii miscarii de insurectie catolica impotriva regimului condus de presedintele Calles, un marxist pur sange. Nu sunt evitate momentele delicate pentru tabara religioasa, precum afluenta de preoti pistolari sau incendierea unui tren cu inocenti, asa ca filmul nu cade in hagiografie catolica. Asta desi José Luis Sánchez del Rio, un tanar ucis pentru credinta sa la doar 14 ani si beatificat recent de Benedict al XVI-lea, are parte de un portret emotionant, printr-o reproducere simbolica a drumului Golgotei. Exista chiar si premisele unor discutii mai consistente in film, iar problemele ridicate depasesc lejer obisnuintele cinefilului hipnotizat de efecte speciale sau de cadrele interminabile si nihilismul manifest ale (mereu) noului val. “For greater glory” respira o decenta placuta, ceea ce face ca in pofida scenelor de violenta destul de lungi sa nu existe un deliciu sangvinar. Insa cel mai important merit al filmului consta, cred, in redescoperirea acestei istorii ocultate deliberat. In alta ordine de idei, pentru a va da seama cam care sunt standardele morale si estetice ale lumii in care traim va invit sa cititi si cronica semnata de Roger Egbert, cel mai influent critic de film american, castigor de Pulitzer si proprietar de stea pe Walk of Fame, pentru care “For Greater Glory” ar fi trebuit sa includa si cazul altor religii pentru a fi credbil!!!
